Havana: Founded in 1592 as a gateway to the new world and the major trading port for the Spanish colonies. Today a UNESCO World Heritage Site with five centuries of history from Spanish colonial times, through democracy, revolution and communism. Host city for the 2007 Icograda World Design Congress.
This album presents collection of images from old Havana - taken between 2007 and 2009. It is one of those trips that inspired me the most. Havana is a romantic place, full of symbolism, ideology, idealistic thinking that went wrong, Cuban culture, rum and cigars. Hundreds years of history of colonial slavery and trade followed by the years of capitalist exploitation and communist regime. Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado, and the newer suburban districts. Old Havana, with its narrow streets and overhanging balconies, is the traditional centre of part of Havana s commerce, industry, and entertainment, as well as being a residential area. It is a vivid and interesting neighborhood where one can experience every day life of Cubans. Waves crashing against Malecon in old Havana. April 2009. Reflection... Captivating and inspiring. Havana, April 2009. Havana: Around every corner, behind each building and monument, at every time of the day, one can discover a new inspiration...Seeing the world is learning its diversity and beauty. It is also finding an inspiration... Like this one. Old part of Havana, some parts of the city have been restored , the other still represent typical Cuban urban landscape. Havana Vieja, October 2007. Vintage cars in Havana Vieja. Havana is unique due to its unrivalled rhythmic arcades built largely by Spanish immigrants. Many interior patios remain similar to designs in Seville, Cadiz and Granada. Neo-classicism affected all new buildings in Havana and can be seen all over the city. Located on a small knoll overlooking the entrance to Havana Bay, is the art-deco style Hotel Nacional de Cuba; originally built in 1929-30. Timeless, Classic, Unique... This is Havana. Built initially in 1589 in response to raids on Havana harbor, el Morro protected the mouth of the harbor with a chain being strung out across the water to the fort at La Punta. Monther y un niño (Mother and a child). April 2009 The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a historic luxury hotel located on the Malecón in Havana, Cuba. It was designed by the famous New York firm McKim, Mead and White and features an eclectic mix of architectural styles. It opened in 1930, when Cuba was a prime travel destination for Americans, long before the embargo. Cuba. Image taken in October 2007. 1950s American car in the street of Havana Vieja. April 2009 Señora cubana. Cuban Flag captured from the Hotel National. Capitol: Former seat of the Cuban Parliament until the revolution. Old branch of the Canadian Bank of Nova Scotia - nationalised during the Cuban revolution. Old Walls. Old Walls. Behind every corner, there is someone waiting for something... Beaches near the resorts of Santa Clara outside of Havana. Santa Maria. Cuba\'s climate is tropical and moderated by trade winds. The dry season lasts from November to April and the rainy season from May to October. Casa particular (Spanish for private house; plural casas particulares) is a phrase meaning private accommodation or private homestays in Cuba, very similar to bed and breakfast although it can also take the form of vacation rental. After the sun sets, Havana performing arts come to life in numerous cafes and restaurants. The flag of Cuba was adopted on May 20, 1902, containing a field with three blue stripes and two white stripes, and a red equilateral triangle at the hoist with a white 5-pointed star. The flag of Cuba was designed in 1848 for the liberation movement, which sought independence from Spain. Back in 2007 when I visited Havana for the first time, after walking around run down streets and exploring the poor part of town, I came across this graffiti. Idealistic, romantic, touching - reflecting what I discovered about Cuba and Cubans. Perhaps this is way I decided to include this in the gallery: Sometimes I wish that live was never ending and all good things ever last... La puesta del sol sobre Cuba. Old Havana, (La Habana Vieja in Spanish), contains the core of the original city of Havana, it is the richest colonial set of Latin America. Havana Vieja was founded by the Spanish in 1519 in the natural harbor of the Bay of Havana. The Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Havana (Cathedral of Saint Christopher of Havana) is a Roman Catholic Cathedral and is the seat of Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, the Cardinal Archbishop of Havana, Cuba. It was constructed by Jesuits (1748–77) on the site of an earlier church. Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier famously described the Cathedral as music set in stone. It is the most prominent building on the Plaza de la Catedral, in Old Havana. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Old Havana, (La Habana Vieja in Spanish), contains the core of the original city of Havana, it is the richest colonial set of Latin America. Havana Vieja was founded by the Spanish in 1519 in the natural harbor of the Bay of Havana. It became a stopping point for the treasure laden Spanish Galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. In the 17th century it was one of the main shipbuilding centers. The city was built in baroque and neoclassic style. Many buildings have fallen in ruin but a number are being restored. The narrow streets of old Havana contain many buildings, accounting for perhaps as many as one-third of the approximately 3,000 buildings found in Old Havana. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592 and a royal decree in 1634 recognized its importance by officially designating it the Key to the New World and Rampart of the West Indies. Built in 1589 is a picturesque fortress guarding the entrance to Havana bay. One of the iconic landmarks of Cuban history. Built initially in 1589 in response to raids on Havana harbor, el Morro protected the mouth of the harbor with a chain being strung out across the water to the fort at La Punta. Havana. Havana has more than five hundred year existence, the city boasts some of the most diverse styles of architecture in the world. From castles built in the late 16th century to modernist present-day high-rises. ... ... Señora cubana. The population of Cuba has very complex origins and intermarriage between diverse groups is general. There is disagreement about racial statistics. The Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami says that 62% is black, whereas statistics from the Cuban census state that 65.05% of the population was white in 2002. From my own perspective, majority of population in Havana seemed black or at least mixed race. A rusty, old American car in a typical street view of Havana. Many so-called yank tanks remain in use from pre-revolutionary days. Old Polish car dating back to 1970s. Over forty years after his execution, Ches life and legacy still remain a contentious issue. Poster Exhibition at the House of Americas during the Icograda World Design Congress in 2008. Breathtaking... Captivating... Inspiring. La puesta del sol sobre Cuba. La puesta del sol sobre Cuba.
